Supreme Court To Start Sending WhatsApp Updates About Cases, CJI Says 'Potential To Have A Big Bang Impact'

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud today announced the new initiative of integrating the WhatsApp messaging services with the IT services, launched by the Supreme Court.

As per the new initiative, all the Advocates on Record and Parties in Person will receive important updates relating to the filed cases directly to their WhatsApp numbers. The CJI opined this to have the potential of bringing a 'big bang impact'

"In the 75th year of its existence, the Supreme Court of India launches a small initiative. It has the potential to have a big-bang impact. Whatsapp messenger has been a ubiquitous service in our daily lives and has taken a role of a powerful communication tool. To strengthen the right to access to Justice and enhance transparency in the judicial system, the Supreme Court announces integration of Whatsapp messaging services with its IT services."

The CJI clarified that through this initiative, the Advocates on Record and parties in person will receive automated WhatsApp updates/automated messages regarding:

1. Electronic filing

2. Causelists

3. Orders and judgements

These automated messages will be received on the successful filing of cases. This also includes notifications about objections marked by the registry in the cases so filed. The cause lists will be sent to all members of the bar by the registry as and when published. The orders and judgements available on the website will also be sent through WhatsApp.

The Supreme Court's official number will be - 876 876 76- only transmits one-way communication.
