The Supreme Court has appointed Justice Aniruddha Bose as the Director of The National Judicial Academy (NJAC), Bhopal. The Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud announced the decision of appointment during the ceremonial bench conducted honoring the retiring justice. Justice Bose, who is demitting office on April 10, will now be heading the NJAC, Bhopal.
CJI, during the ceremonial bench proceedings to bid farewell to Justice Bose, said that he would make the perfect fit for the position of Director, NJAC considering his strong desire to ensure that justice is meted out to the last man standing in the hope for relief.
CJI also lauded Justice Bose's ability to manage his personal difficulties along with his professional commitment towards the Court. Remarking on his eclectic taste in arts, be it poetry, music, literature or dressing, the CJI considered Justice Bose as the "Bengali Bhadralok".
" He reflects Bengali Bhadralok, including not the least attire of the dhoti panjabi, except yesterday when we held a farewell for him last night, he came very properly attired, from a judge's perspective in suit, because he knew it was such a formal occasion. Otherwise, we are always delighted at his sartorial elegance which he can now return to. His taste, whether in reading, music, prose or poetry is really truly eclectic and that reflects what a refined personality he is in more than one sense. He has never allowed his personal tragedies to get the better of his judicial work and held firm at the most difficult of times. He has never let a member of the bar or a litigant know what he is combatting, I think the institution supports one another.."
Justice Bose in his farewell address expressed how learning for him did not stop even as a Supreme Court Justice. He was grateful for the assistance rendered by the bar in deciding cases, as he opined that only a diversity of viewpoints can enhance the quality of decision-making of a judge.
Justice Bose was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Before the elevation, Justice Bose served as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Justice Bose was part of several important Constitutional Benches including the reference Bench against the EV Chinnaiah judgement relating to the issue of preferential treatment in reservations; directions on Passive Euthanasia; appointment of Election Commissioners; Clarification on Joseph Shine and Validity of Jallikattu. Justice Bose was also part of the majority opinion in M/s N.N. Global Mercantile Pvt. Ltd. v. M/s. Indo Unique Flame Ltd. And Ors. which was later overruled by a 7-judge bench in December.
