Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Wednesday said that no designated Senior Advocate will be allowed to orally mention matters in Court no.1 from next Monday (August 11).
CJI Gavai made this statement when Senior Advocate Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared to make an oral mention of a matter. CJI said that juniors must be given the opportunity.
CJI said that he is making this rule effective only from next Monday, so that everyone gets notice about it.
When Singhvi got up to mention the matter, CJI told him, "There is a great demand that we should stop mentioning by senior counsel."
"I am all for it, if it is applied uniformly," Singhvi replied.
"We will implement it. No senior counsel will be allowed to mention. Let juniors have the opportunity," CJI said.
"From Monday, in Court no.1, no senior counsel will be allowed to mention the matters. No designated senior counsel. From Monday we will follow this. So that nobody is taken by surprise," CJI Gavai told the Court master to publish a notice regarding this.
"It may be made uniform across all courts," Singhvi suggested. CJI said that he can implement only in his bench. "At least in Court no.1 it will not be permitted. Let juniors have opportunities," CJI said.
