A Court in Jharkhand's Chaibasa district today granted bail to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in connection with a defamation case pertaining to his alleged remarks on Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Gandhi personally appeared before Spl. Judge, MP-MLA Court, Chaibasa, Supriya Rani Tigga and surrendered to seek bail in the case.
Previously on February 27, the MP-MLA Court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Gandhi. Subsequently, on March 14, the court had insisted on Gandhi's physical appearance, rejecting his plea to be represented by a pleader.
On June 10, the Jharkhand High Court had granted him relief in the case till August 6 subject to the condition that he shall appear before the Court personally.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Pratap Kumar, a resident of Chaibasa, alleging derogatory remarks made by Gandhi against Shah during a Congress convention in 2018.
In his purported remarks, Gandhi had allegedly stated that no murderer could ascend to the position of national president within the Congress party. He further allegedly remarked that such an occurrence was only conceivable within the BJP (referring to then BJP chief, Shah).
