Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar voiced support for Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai, after the latter expressed displeasure over the protocol lapse by the Maharashtra Government officials during his state visit.
Yesterday, CJI Gavai said that the Maharashtra Chief Secretary, DGP or Mumbai Police Commissioner didn't meet him on his first visit to his home state as the CJI.
Referring to the above incident, the Vice President expressed:
"This morning I was reminded of something which is very critical in the country. As the present Chief Justice of India said, we must believe in protocol.
I am beholden to the present Chief Justice for inviting attention to people in bureaucracy that adherence to protocol is fundamental.
Protocol is placed very high for the Chief Justice of India. When he indicated the same, it was not personal."
In a sense, I am also a sufferer; you have seen in case of the photograph of the President and the Prime Minister, but not of the Vice-President. Once I demit the office, I'll ensure that my successor has a photograph."
At the event, the CJI said that he usually doesn't believe in "protocol", added, "Every organ of the Constitution must reciprocate and give respect to the other organ of the Constitution. When the son of this State, who has become the CJI comes to Maharashtra for the first time, if the State's Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police etc do not want to attend the event, that is best left on their wisdom."
CJI Gavai was speaking at Mumbai yesterday to attend a felicitation ceremony organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
