An appeal in legal proceedings is a process by which a higher court reviews a decision made by a lower court. The purpose of an appeal is to challenge the legal reasoning or factual basis of the lower court’s decision.

During an appeal, the higher court examines the record of the lower court’s proceedings and may hear oral arguments from the parties involved. The higher court may then affirm the lower court’s decision, reverse it, or remand the case back to the lower court for further proceedings.

Appeals are typically filed by the party that lost in the lower court, and the party filing the appeal is known as the appellant. The opposing party is known as the appellee. The appellant must typically show that there was an error of law or fact in the lower court’s decision, and that this error affected the outcome of the case.

The appeal process can be complex and time-consuming, but it can provide an opportunity for a party to obtain a more favorable outcome in a legal dispute.
